Gianluca Catalano

I’m Gianluca Catalano, a former Canadian professional goalkeeper and current coach committed to using my playing and academic experiences to inspire and guide the next generation of athletes.

 

My career has taken me from representing Canada at the U17 World Cup qualifiers, to earning a full scholarship at the University of Connecticut, to signing my first professional contract with York United. Along the way, I’ve played across nearly every league in the North American professional pathway, learning first-hand the dedication, resilience, and adaptability required to succeed. These experiences have shown me that every athlete’s journey is unique, and I’m passionate about helping players navigate their own paths, on the field and in life. My goal is to provide the insights, strategies, and support I wish I had, empowering athletes to unlock their full potential and pursue success with confidence.

Education:

University of Connecticut (2018-2022): Bachelors in Health Sciences 

Brock University (2024-2026): Masters in Sport Management

 

Coaching Experience: 

  • Vaughan Azzurri Soccer Club Goalkeeper Coach (2022-2024) 

  • Toronto FC Academy Goalkeeper Coach (2024-2025) 

  • Niagara Falls Soccer Club Head of Goalkeeping (2025-Present) 

  • Ridley College Assistant Coach (2025-Present)

 

Certifications: 

  • “Ontario Goalkeeper Coaching Certificate” Administered by Ontario Soccer Association.

  • “Mental health in sport” Administered by the Coaches Association of Canada. 

  • UEFA C License

 

Playing Experience:

  1. Toronto FC Academy - League One Ontario (2012-2018):

    • Developed technical skills and gained a deep understanding of the game from grassroots to elite levels.

  2. Toronto FC 2, USL Championship (2016-2018):

    • Acquired professional playing experience while contributing to the development of young talents in coaching U12 summer clinics within Toronto FC summer camps.

  3. Collegiate Soccer NCAA D1 (2018-2021):

    • UCONN Huskies: Started building a strong foundation in the U.S. collegiate soccer scene reaching both the conference tournament and NCAA tournament. 

  4. AC Connecticut USL 2 (2019)  

    • Spent the summer of 2019 gaining game experience and additional exposure throughout the United States.

  5. York United CPL (2022-2023)

    • Acquired professional playing experience while contributing to the development of young talents in coaching  

  6. Vaughan Azzurri Canadian Championship (2023) 

    • Had the privilege to play for Vaughan SC in the Canadian Championship against CF Montreal at Stade Saputo.

  7. Toronto FC 2 MLS Next Pro (2023):

    • Showcased high-level playing skills in one of North America's top leagues this past season.
